Terms of Service

Effective April 10, 2026

These terms govern your use of Manuscribe ("we," "us," "our"), the website at manuscribe.com, and the Manuscribe application. By creating an account, you agree to these terms.

We also have a Privacy Policy that explains how we handle your data.

1. Your account

You must be at least 13 years old to use Manuscribe. You are responsible for keeping your account credentials secure. One account per person.

2. Your content

You own everything you write in Manuscribe. Your manuscripts, outlines, notes, and all other creative content are yours. We claim no intellectual property rights over your work.

You grant us a limited license to store, display, transmit, and process your content solely to provide the service to you (for example, syncing your manuscript across devices, rendering it in the editor, and sending excerpts to our AI provider when you request feedback). This license ends when you delete your content or your account.

If you share chapters with editors or beta readers through Manuscribe, you control who has access and can revoke it at any time.

3. AI features

Manuscribe offers AI-powered editorial feedback. Here is how it works:

  • Your content is not used for training. Our AI provider (OpenAI) does not use data sent through their API to train models.
  • Built into the product. AI powers several Manuscribe features: editorial feedback (when you request it), auto-catalog (automatically detecting characters, places, and objects as you write), and import processing. Your manuscript text is sent to our AI provider as part of normal use.
  • Feedback is editorial commentary, not prose. AI feedback analyzes your writing and offers suggestions. It does not insert or ghostwrite text into your manuscript.
  • You own all AI outputs. We make no intellectual property claim over the feedback generated for you. Note that AI-generated text may not be independently copyrightable under current US law.
  • AI is not a substitute for a human editor. AI feedback may be incomplete, inaccurate, or miss context. Use your own judgment.

4. Billing and cancellation

Free trial

New accounts include a 7-day free trial with access to all features. No credit card is required to start a trial.

Subscriptions

Paid subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period (monthly or annual). We will notify you by email before your first renewal.

Cancellation

You can cancel your subscription at any time from your account settings. You keep access through the end of your current billing period. We do not prorate partial months.

Refunds

If you are not satisfied within the first 14 days of a new annual subscription, email us at hello@manuscribe.com for a full refund. Monthly subscriptions are not refundable but you can cancel at any time.

Price changes

If we change our pricing, we will give you at least 30 days notice by email. Price changes take effect at your next renewal after the notice period.

5. Acceptable use

Manuscribe is a tool for fiction and nonfiction writers. We recognize that creative writing explores the full range of human experience, including mature themes like violence, sexuality, politics, and moral complexity. Writing about difficult subjects is not a violation of these terms.

You may not use Manuscribe to:

  • Store or distribute child sexual abuse material (CSAM)
  • Incite real-world violence against specific people or groups
  • Distribute malware or engage in phishing
  • Infringe on the copyrights of others
  • Use automated tools to scrape or overload our systems
  • Attempt to access other users' accounts or data

6. Copyright

We respect intellectual property rights. If you believe content on Manuscribe infringes your copyright, send a DMCA takedown notice to hello@manuscribe.com with:

  • A description of the copyrighted work
  • The location of the infringing material on our service
  • Your contact information
  • A statement that you have a good faith belief the use is not authorized
  • A statement under penalty of perjury that your notice is accurate
  • Your physical or electronic signature

We will respond to valid DMCA notices and may terminate the accounts of repeat infringers.

7. Termination

To delete your account, email us at hello@manuscribe.com. We will delete your account and your data from our systems within 30 days. Some data may persist in third-party service provider systems (such as payment records in Stripe or processing logs in OpenAI) per their own retention policies.

We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these terms. For non-egregious violations, we will give you 30 days notice and an opportunity to fix the issue or export your data. For serious violations (illegal content, abuse, security threats), we may terminate immediately.

8. Service availability

We work to keep Manuscribe available and reliable, but we cannot guarantee 100% uptime. We may need to take the service offline for maintenance with reasonable notice when possible.

If we remove a paid feature, we will give you at least 30 days notice.

9. Backups and data loss

While we take steps to protect your data, no system is infallible. We strongly recommend keeping independent copies of your manuscripts (for example, by periodically exporting to .docx). Your manuscripts represent significant creative work and you should not rely solely on any single service for storage.

10. Feedback and suggestions

If you send us feedback, feature requests, or suggestions, we may use them to improve Manuscribe without compensation or attribution. We do not claim ownership of your ideas — you are free to share the same feedback with anyone else.

11. Disclaimers

Manuscribe is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

AI editorial feedback is not professional editing advice. We do not guarantee its accuracy, completeness, or suitability for any purpose.

12. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability to you for any claims arising from your use of Manuscribe is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose. If you are on a free plan, our maximum liability is $100 USD.

We are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, including lost profits or lost data.

13. Dispute resolution

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Florida. Any disputes will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Florida. Either party may bring claims in small claims court if the claim qualifies.

14. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. We will update the effective date at the top of this page when we do. Continued use of Manuscribe after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
