Getting started
Will this work with my Word files?
Yes. Import any .docx file and Manuscribe splits it into chapters and scenes automatically. When you’re done, export back to .docx with tracked changes intact. Full round-trip.
What file formats can I import?
Word .docx and EPUB files today. We’re working on Scrivener .scriv import — if that’s important to you, let us know at hello@manuscribe.com.
Do I have to start from scratch?
Not at all. Most authors import an existing draft. You can also start with a blank manuscript if you prefer.
Feedback & editing
How is this different from Grammarly or ProWritingAid?
Tools like Grammarly and ProWritingAid are great at catching grammar, spelling, and style issues. Manuscribe covers that ground too, but goes further with three layers of feedback:
- Developmental — structure, pacing, character arcs, and plot logic, grounded in your outline and scene goals
- Line editing — style, clarity, and voice consistency across scenes
- Copy editing — grammar, spelling, and punctuation
Will it change my voice?
No. Every suggestion shows the original and the proposed change side by side. You accept or reject each one individually. Nothing is auto-applied. Your voice stays yours.
What are the three feedback layers?
You choose which layers to use, separately or together:
- Developmental — structure, pacing, and story-level issues
- Line editing — style, clarity, and voice consistency
- Copy editing — grammar, spelling, and punctuation
Sharing & collaboration
How does sharing work?
- You pick the chapters you want to share and send a private link — only people you invite can access it
- Your editor or beta reader signs in with a free account
- They leave inline suggestions and comments, or download the .docx, mark it up in Word, and upload it back
- They click “Submit Feedback” when done
- Their suggestions appear in your Revise mode — you accept or reject each one
Can I work with someone who only uses Word?
Yes. Send them the share link. From the review room they can download the chapter as a .docx, mark it up with tracked changes in Word, and upload it back. When they submit, the changes appear in your Revise mode like any other feedback.
Do editors and beta readers need a paid subscription?
No. Leaving feedback is always free — only authoring your own manuscripts requires a subscription.
Planning & organization
Do I have to use the outline templates?
No. Templates like Save the Cat and Hero’s Journey are optional scaffolds. Discovery writers can skip them entirely and outline loosely (or not at all). Planners can use them as structure. It’s your process.
What’s the auto-catalog?
As you write (or when you import), Manuscribe detects characters, places, terms, objects, rules, and events and tracks which scenes they appear in. Think of it as a world bible that stays current without manual upkeep.
Pricing & trial
How much does it cost?
$20/month or $200/year (2 months free). One plan, no feature tiers — every author gets the full draftroom.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. 7 days, no credit card required. Import a manuscript or start fresh and use every feature.
What happens when my trial ends?
You can export your manuscripts — your work is never held hostage. Authoring features (creating content, running feedback, and sharing) are paused until you subscribe.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. Cancel from your account settings. You keep access through the end of your billing period.
